About BFA

History

The Boston Flute Academy (BFA) was founded in 2008 by Boston flutist Judy Grant.  Her vision was a supportive flute community where the finest teachers and world-class guest artists would be accessible to all ages and levels of students.  The school is possibly the first of its kind, offering a conservatory curriculum designed specifically for flutists.  Originally known for its accelerated training program for flutists seeking performance careers, the BFA has grown to provide innovative and inspiring classes for all flutists, from novice to professional.

BFA’s pilot season ran in 2008-2009, followed by an official inaugural concert presenting BFA to the public in January 2010.   BFA has been growing ever since.  In Fall 2010 we moved from director Judy Grant’s home studio into a larger space at the Maliotis Cultural Center, on the Hellenic College campus in Brookline.  That gave us the ability to expand our programs and serve more flute students, and to invite Guest Artists from around the world to visit BFA.   Now BFA presents more guest flutists each year than all the Boston area college conservatories combined.

BFA’s original Young Artist program continues to thrive, with students ranking among the best high school and college flutists in the nation.  The finest conservatories of the world, such as Juilliard, Eastman, and the Royal College of Music in London, continue to recruit our Young Artists.  BFA now offers programs for young beginners up through adults.  Our private lessons students can choose to participate either in accelerated training or in the general studies program, where they can progress at their own pace.  The BFA Ensemble and Seminar Program is a visionary concept and bridges a gap in building more complete musicians and well informed players at every level.  We now have 8 weekend flute classes at BFA, for students of all ages from Grade 4 to adult.
